Japan is one of the key regional destinations for Nepalese migrant workers. From the year 1990 to 2019 the number of migrants in Japan has almost tripled and as of 2019, it has reached 2.82 million which is 2.22% of the total population. As of 2022 end, there are 1,39,393 Nepalese living in Japan consisting of temporary expatriates and permanent residents along with their locally-born descendants. Almost 85% of the migrant worker who move to Japan for employment, education, and other purposes belong to the age group of 15-65 which represents a working demographic of the country.

Migration to Japan for higher education among Nepalese students has been relatively a new phenomenon but has been accelerated over the years. The number of students in Japan has significantly increased from 1000 in 2008 to 29,000 in 2019. Nepalese students’ migration to Japan continues even today.
